On July 23, 2018, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) demolished buildings in Kibera as part of a road construction project designed to relieve traffic congestion in Nairobi, by building a highway that will pass through part of the slum. The destroyed buildings included homes, schools, churches and clinics. Over 30,000 people were left homeless.
